In a pre-pandemic world, M&A activity in Vietnam had steadily grown with the total value of transactions reaching US$10 billion in 2018 and US$15.6 billion in 2019, a robust YoY growth rate of 60 percent and 54 percent respectively.
However, a sharp decrease in M&As at a global scale was inevitable in 2020 due to the effects of COVID-19. Fortunately, this downward trend seems to be a short-term effect. As organizations have gradually adapted to the new reality, experts forecast that M&As will accelerate as businesses restructure, find liquidity or are forced to sell. Meanwhile, those who have managed to retain a healthy balance sheet can take advantage of companies in distress now and post pandemic.
In this context, Vietnam is one of the world’s most attractive markets for M&As, forecast to be second to the US only in 2021 and 2022 by Euromonitor.
